Family cases are personal, and they affect children long after the judgment. Al-Amthal acts in divorce, khula, custody, visitation and alimony cases before the Family Courts in Cairo, and drafts marriage contracts that protect both sides. We listen first, keep matters discreet, and look for a settlement where one is possible.

When you need a family lawyer in Egypt

People come to us at different moments. Some want a clear marriage contract before the wedding. Some are separating and need to know their rights to alimony, the marital home and custody. Others already have a judgment and need it enforced, or need visitation arranged with a parent who lives abroad.

Personal status matters in Egypt are heard by the Family Courts. Before most cases are filed, the law requires a request to the Family Dispute Settlement Office, which tries to bring the two sides to an agreement. A lawyer helps at this stage too, because a good settlement often serves the children better than a long case.

How we handle a family case

The first meeting is confidential and unhurried. We ask about the marriage, the children and the family income, and we look at documents such as the marriage contract and birth certificates. Then we explain the options: divorce for harm, khula or a negotiated separation, and what each means for alimony, custody and the home.

If a case is needed, we prepare it, gather evidence of income and need, and represent you at each hearing. We also handle the smaller applications that follow, such as interim alimony, schooling and travel of the children, and enforcement of payments. Where a judgment is wrong, we appeal.

Family matters for Egyptians in the Gulf and abroad

Many of our family clients live in Kuwait, the UAE or Saudi Arabia while their case, their children or the other parent are in Egypt. We act in Egypt on a power of attorney and keep you informed throughout. We also advise on how an Egyptian marriage, divorce or custody judgment relates to the country where you live, and give legal consultations on these questions through our offices in Kuwait and Dubai. Questions clients ask

How does khula work in Egypt?

Khula allows a wife to end the marriage through the Family Court by giving up her financial rights, such as the deferred dowry and her own alimony, and returning the dowry she received. The court first tries to reconcile the couple. Khula does not affect custody or the children's right to support. We explain whether khula or divorce for harm suits your situation.

Who gets custody of children after divorce in Egypt?

Under current Egyptian law, custody goes first to the mother until the child reaches fifteen, after which the judge may let the child choose. The father remains the guardian and must support the children, and the parent without custody has a right of visitation. Each case turns on its own facts, so we review yours in detail.

Can I file a family case in Egypt while living abroad?

Yes. You can give us a power of attorney at an Egyptian consulate and we will file and follow the case in Egypt. Some steps, such as the settlement session or taking an oath, may need you in person or a special authorisation, and we tell you in advance which ones. We report to you after every hearing.
